KENTUCKY DRIVER JIM LEMASTER CLAIMS 3rd
ANNUAL
STREET STOCK WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE
9/29/02
submitted by: Randy Matheny & Herman Staats
Falcon, Kentucky driver Jim Lemaster claimed the title to the 3rd
Annual American Payroll Advance, Ltd. Street Stock World Championship, at
Muskingum County Speedway in Zanesville Ohio on Sunday evening, after a lengthy
delay on Friday, due to the consistent rains that fell all day. The
original 2-day show was scheduled for Friday and Saturday but was pushed back to
Saturday and Sunday after Mother Nature dropped rain all day Friday.
Lemaster drove the Bruce and Anita Spence owned #42 street stock with
American Racer tires as sponsorship comes from Spence Logging, Barker Mobile
Homes and Spence Trucking on a Checkered Flag Speed Shop Chassis.
"This is an awesome thing to accomplish!" stated Lemaster in
Budweiser Victory Lane. "We need to thank all of our sponsors and
really appreciate Bruce & Anita Spence for this opportunity to enter this
race, and, to think we actually have won!", with total jubilation in his
voice! "This is just a home-made engine that really has nothing
special about it like some of the professional engine builders sell," he
added. Lemaster gave additional thanks to Matt Spence, Glenn Lint and Bob
Rehl with recognition to his pit crew Matthew Spence, Doris Hardin, Claude
Spence, Bryce and Toby.
The action began on Saturday with the elimination races that came down to
the first 25-lap A-Main where the first 12 drivers were decided and transferred
into the 75-lap SSWC feature event.
Racing resumed on Sunday with 6 heat races, 3 B-Mains and the second
25-lap A-Main that decided the second 12 drivers to transfer into the 75-lap
feature event for positions 13 thru 24. 2 provisionals were selected with
Rick Hines (2000 winner) going into starting spot 25 and Chuck Haga (fast
qualifier not making the show) in the 26th starting spot.
The 75-lap main event started at 9:10 pm, lasting one hour and 12
minutes, after the complete driver introduction on the frontstretch that saw 7
different states represented. The elimination races of 143 cars from 12
states and Canada saw the best drivers right there in front of the race fans,
ready to decide another winner and the top prize of $7,500!
The racing action began with Rod White and Mitch Gillian starting from
the front row as Bruce Dennis, Paul Belken Jr., Mike Ankrom, Lee Hobbs, Toad
Fordyce, Rob House, Jerry Farmer, Bob Cannon, Jim Lemaster and Kenny Johnson
following for the first 12 starting spots.
White immediately took the lead with Gillian hot on his tail as Ankrom
and Belken followed but the caution flag appeared for a spinning Lee Hobbs and
3rd starting Dennis was sent to the tail for the restart! White continued
his lead for the scoring of the second thru 11 laps as Lemaster was moving up
through the field.
Lemaster scored in the second spot as a spinning Jeremy Blake brought out
the next caution flag in turn #3. Lemaster was ready for the restart and
scored in the top position after making a pass on White thru turns 3 & 4!
The caution appeared for a slowing Rob House but the pass was good and the new
leader was ready to burn up the track! House brought out another yellow
flag on the next lap was was sent pitside for his 2-caution rule on lap #13.
Lemaster continued to lead over White and Gillian as Ankrom was dealing
with the #46 car of Belken Jr. who had dropped a few spots but now had things
figured out and was ready to start his advancement toward the front.
The race behind leader Lemaster was between White and Gillian for laps 14
thru 23 as Gillian made a pass for second place ahead of White, and, Belken Jr
was now running 4th with Jerry Farmer in 5th!
Debris slowed racing action on lap 25 but the top five held strong for
the restart and fans were still witnessing the amazing charges of Dennis as he
was now going into the 6th spot for the scoring of lap 28, and then, broke into
the top five on lap 53! Don't forget--Dennis started from the tail of 26
cars for his caution on the first lap!
Belken Jr moved White back to take 3rd on lap 33 and kept hounding
Gillian for second place. Belken took over second place from Gillian on
lap 47 and started pressuring the leader Lemaster through the turns and down the
straightaways. Belken took over the first place position on the next lap
(lap 48) as Dennis was hot on the tail of Gillian, taking over 4th place on lap
54, pushing Farmer back to 5th.
Belken pulled out in front of the pack as Dennis made a pass for 3rd on
lap 60 and White was now in 5th place.
Lap 61 saw only 17 cars left as Belken Jr. led but immediately broke a
rear-end and dropped pit-side! This put Lemaster back into the lead as
Dennis, Gillian, White and Ankrom held the top five spots!
Three more caution periods slowed racing action before the end of this
3rd annual event but it was lap 72 that saw a big moan from the fans in the
grandstands as the #7 car of Gillian started throwing pieces of red-hot metal on
the track and eventually broke, coming to a rest toward the pit entrance!
Losing $2,000 for a potential 3rd place finish was a hard thing to swallow after
an excellant race from this driver!
The restart had Lemaster still in the lead for a 3-lap shootout to the
end as Dennis, White, Ankrom and Larry Moran sat in the top five spots.
Lemaster held strong to his position in front as the checker flag signaled the
end! Bruce Dennis, Rod White, Larry Moran and Bob Cannon completed the top
five. Cannon made a comeback after falling back in the pack to be scored
as far back as 9th early on in the race.
Ryan Driemeyer was credited with the Hard Charger award for his most
advancements to the end without penalty. Driemeyer also had a borrowed
rear-end from the #46 crew of Belken Jr. Hard Charger recognition
certainly goes to Bruce Dennis for finishing second but was unable to claim it
due to his penalty at the beginning of the race.
